Taxonomist is the best way to discover taxonomy. Learn more about the origin of the species and their connections in a simple and visual way. This carefully designed app is a perfect complement for biology and natural science students. Give it a try and tell me what you think.
You're ready now, become a taxonomist!
Just type a scientific or a common name in the search bar and Taxonomist will display the requested info from the NCBI’s Taxonomy database.
Keep all your related searches together and access them quicker in the future. Then build your own tree of life with your iPad.
Continue discovering even more species, and if you don't find one, join me at open.gservera.com and bring your knowledge to the open database.
Work with multiple documents and place them in the cloud to sync changes across all your devices. And, of course, share them with whoever you want!
Tap on any taxon in the lineage view to see more information about it without losing your current search result. Easy, fast and unlimited.
Want to hide taxon names? Or get rid of the taxa with no rank? No problem, reach the app settings to customize the UI to your needs.
With the amazing new drag and drop capabilities on the iPad you can now drag a species (or even more than one!) over the currently selected species to create a lineage alignment where you’ll be able to learn more about how these species have evolved over time
Taxonomist has been developed using modern technologies (like Swift 4) and adopting most iOS accessibility features, including VoiceOver navigation and Dynamic Type, with the aim of making it useful for anyone and everybody. With this idea in mind, I've also made the Taxonomist's translation project public, so if you find a typo or want to participate translating the app into your language, you may do it via POEditor.
Moreover, TaxonomyKit, the open source library that powers Taxonomist is also publicly available on GitHub, so feel free to check it out if you have some ideas or want to use it in any other educational and/or scientific project!
